Cruise Passenger Rescued After 20 Hours in the Water, and the Coast Guard Video Is Stunning

A 44-year-old woman from El Salvador spent roughly 20 hours in open water after going overboard from a cruise ship early Friday, and she lived to tell the story. Greek authorities say the Hellenic Coast Guard activated a local emergency plan and led the search that ultimately found her. USA Today reported she had been sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas.

The video released by the Coast Guard shows the moment of rescue: the woman floating in a lifebuoy, a crew member calling out “Are you OK?”, a rope thrown across the water, and then the remarkable sight of her grabbing it and pulling herself toward the rescue vessel on her own power. She received first aid once she was aboard.

For those of us here on the Suncoast, this story lands a little differently. Our community is cruise country, with thousands of passengers sailing out of Tampa and Port Canaveral every year. Overboard incidents are rare, but they do happen, and this case is a powerful reminder of how quickly the sea can change a trip. It’s also a testament to what a coordinated search effort and a lifebuoy can do. Have you ever had a close call on the water? Tell us about it in the comments.
