81-Year-Old Killed in Mississippi Home Invasion: What Suncoast Residents Can Learn About Home Safety

An 81-year-old Mississippi man, Bobby McGill, was killed early Thursday during a home invasion after authorities say he tried to fight off an intruder. McGill and a woman were in bed around 4 a.m. when Eric Basco entered the home. The woman escaped and called 911. Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said Basco got hold of McGill’s gun and shot him, then went into a bathroom and shot himself. Basco is recovering at a hospital.

The case is a hard reminder that these incidents move fast and rarely go the way people envision. For the many retirees and snowbirds who live independently across the Suncoast’s Gulf Coast communities, home safety deserves more than a passing thought. Simple steps matter: solid locks on every door, working exterior lighting, a phone within reach at night, and a clear plan for how to exit and call for help rather than confront someone.

The woman in this case did what safety experts recommend when escape is possible. She got out and called 911, which may have saved her life. Talking with a neighbor, checking on an older friend, and scheduling a family safety conversation costs nothing and can change everything. What’s one change you’ve made to keep your home safer at night?
