A youth soccer game at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas turned deadly Saturday when a black pickup truck drove through the fields while the game was being played. One child and one adult were killed, and several others were injured, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses. The driver was taken into custody.
A witness described the truck striking multiple people before stopping roughly 100 to 200 yards down the fields. Dozens of emergency responders were on the scene performing CPR and rendering aid, and police were expected to provide another update later in the evening as the investigation continues.
For families across the Suncoast who spend their fall weekends at youth sports complexes from Sarasota to North Port, the story raises hard questions about how open and accessible our own playing fields are. There is no evidence of any local connection, but the emotional one is hard to miss. Our hearts go out to the families in Wichita.
