Charlotte County deputies were called to Bersell Avenue in Port Charlotte Wednesday afternoon for a disturbance between neighbors. According to Sheriff Bill Prummell, the suspect had threatened a neighbor with a firearm. When deputies arrived, the man went back into his home and then came out holding a machete in one hand and a firearm in the other, pointing the gun at a deputy. Two deputies returned fire, and the suspect later died at the hospital.

Neighbors stayed behind the tape for hours as dozens of investigators worked the scene. One resident’s cell phone video captured the sound of rapid gunfire, and another neighbor said she didn’t realize what she was hearing until she drove down the road. The sheriff’s office has not yet released the names of the deputies involved.

The case is still under investigation, and there’s real value in hearing from people who live on that street. If you’re a Port Charlotte neighbor, how does your community stay connected and look out for each other? Share your thoughts in the comments.
