Bersell Avenue in Port Charlotte is back open this morning after a deadly deputy-involved shooting shut it down Wednesday, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Bill Prummell says the incident began as a dispute between neighbors, when one man pulled a gun on the other. The neighbor called 911, and deputies went next door to investigate.
When deputies made contact, the man emerged from his home with a machete and a firearm and pointed the gun at a deputy. Two deputies fired, and the man was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Neighbors in the area told reporters they heard what sounded like pops and didn’t think much of it at the time. One said simply that it’s sad and a shame nobody can just get along.
This marks the third deputy-involved shooting in Charlotte County this year, and the sheriff’s office says the investigation is still active, meaning more details are expected in the coming days. The road reopened hours later, but the questions for everyone living nearby are still settling in.
