A sentencing Friday closed a three-year murder case that began in Anchorage and drew national attention: Zarrius Hildabrand, 24, a former U.S. Army specialist, will serve 59 years in prison for the August 2023 shooting death of his wife, Saria Hildabrand, 21, an Alaska National Guard specialist.
Prosecutors said Saria was killed after a night out celebrating her husband’s 21st birthday, when she discovered he was cheating. The defense argued she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In June, a jury convicted him of second-degree murder and evidence tampering and acquitted him of first-degree murder. The details that surfaced after her death were haunting: he reported her missing, moved her body to a storm drain near their apartment, and joined search efforts before she was found.
The case raises hard questions for military families everywhere, including here on the Suncoast, where veteran and active-duty households are part of the fabric of our beach communities. If someone in your life is in an unsafe relationship, local domestic violence resources can help, and we’ll keep those links on our site.
