Dozens of students at the University of Arizona’s Coronado Dorm were told to relocate after mold was found, some within two hours of an email ordering them to move out for repairs. The discovery started with two freshmen who noticed spots in a bathroom, ran their own mold culture test, and called maintenance. The university says the growth was localized, tied to moisture intruding around an exterior window on the seventh floor, and that an outside remediation firm is handling the cleanup.
The part that’s drawing attention is communication. Some students say they learned about the relocation by word of mouth, and affected rooms are supposed to be reviewed before anyone moves back in. The exact number of relocated students hasn’t been disclosed, which leaves families asking how they’d know service was done right. Here on the Suncoast, where humidity is basically a year-round housemate, we know mold isn’t exotic. It’s a maintenance question, and maintenance questions deserve paper trails.
The practical takeaway for any family with a student in campus housing: report concerns in writing, save the emails, ask who to contact, and request the inspection record when cleanup is finished. A little documentation goes a long way. Has your student ever had a housing health issue? Tell us how the school handled it.
