An Indiana man is facing six charges, including attempted kidnapping and driving while intoxicated, after deputies say he grabbed a girl outside her Salem home, threatened her with a gun, and ordered her into his car while his blood alcohol content was later measured at .292. A family member’s rapid response stopped the encounter before police arrived.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department identified the man as 53-year-old Jeffrey Mauck. According to deputies, he first asked the girl whether her family sold eggs, then grabbed her. Her family heard her screams, came outside, and restrained him until deputies arrived, who reported finding handcuffs underneath him and the smell of alcohol. His bond was set at $2 million full cash on Monday. Mauck’s sister, Anna Hall, called the allegations “just a huge misunderstanding of events” and said her brother is “not aggressive.”

The case raises familiar questions about child safety and about how quickly neighbors act when something sounds wrong. For families here on the Suncoast, the practical takeaway is simple: teach kids to make noise and get to a trusted adult, and if you hear something in your neighborhood that doesn’t sit right, go check and call for help. What would you want your neighbors to do if it were your child crying out?
