A 21-month-old Tennessee girl, Nyxailia Hinton, died Tuesday after being struck by a car at a pumpkin patch in Sevier County. The sheriff’s office says the toddler fell and was hit by a car driven by a family friend. Investigators have not said how or where she fell, and no charges have been filed.

The child’s mother, Peandra Hinton, says a babysitter took her daughter to the patch without permission. She rushed to the hospital, where Nyxailia died from her injuries. The family is planning funeral arrangements while publicly demanding justice, with the father saying they won’t let up until they get answers.

For Suncoast families, this story arrives in the middle of pumpkin patch season. Our farm stands and fall festivals fill up fast this time of year, and the parking areas can get crowded with cars, kids, and parents carrying pumpkins. It’s a good moment to talk about supervision and vehicle safety at these events, and about making sure the adults responsible for a child are the ones a parent actually entrusted.

What’s your family’s rule for keeping kids safe in crowded parking lots at fall events?
