The Suncoast Sand Witches are back for their fourth Halloween season, and the coven has grown. What started as a viral video of Germany’s Wolfshäger Hexenbrut doing a broom routine to Peter Fox’s “Schüttel deinen Speck” inspired local women across Southwest Florida to start their own troupe. Today that troupe numbers 26 witches and one warlock, with members from Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, and Nokomis.
The group performs four routines, including the always-popular zombie shuffle from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” and they add one new dance every Halloween season. The troupe even got some choreography help from a Suncoast View reporter along the way. It’s a light, homegrown tradition built from an internet trend, and it keeps growing.
Want to see them in person? Performance schedules are posted on the Suncoast Sand Witches’ official Facebook page, so check there before heading out to October events and beach gatherings.
