Operation Scarecrow: 30 Arrests After Hillsborough Deputies Check 1,200 Sex Offenders Before Halloween

Before trick-or-treaters hit the sidewalks Saturday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office wrapped up Operation Scarecrow, a compliance sweep that checked 1,202 registered sex offenders living in unincorporated Hillsborough County. Thirty people were arrested for alleged violations, ranging from failing to register vehicles to missing registration deadlines. Deputies partnered with the Florida Department of Corrections and FDLE on the checks, and Sheriff Chad Chronister joined detectives for some of the visits.

Two cases drew particular attention. Reginald Walker, 69, of Plant City, was arrested after detectives found the “Sexual Predator” designation on his ID covered up, along with unreported internet accounts. Robert Williamson, 60, of Brandon, was arrested after an app on his phone was linked to sexual conversations with AI-generated female children. That case raises fresh questions about how supervision rules apply to emerging technology.

For anyone on probation or supervision in Florida, Halloween comes with clear restrictions: no passing out candy, no decorations, and no porch lights left on. For parents, the sweep is a reminder that a few minutes with the FDLE offender registry before heading out can add peace of mind to the fun. If you’re planning your trick-or-treat route this weekend, how do you decide which neighborhoods to visit?
