More than 42 million Americans have already voted in this midterm, and the numbers from the University of Florida Election Lab show Democrats accounting for 44% of early ballots versus roughly 31% for Republicans. That split has analysts comparing 2026 to 2018, the “blue wave” year that posted the highest midterm turnout rate since 1914. Election Lab founder Michael McDonald says it’s possible this year’s turnout beats even that mark.
The more interesting trend might be who’s voting. McDonald points to rising early voting rates among young voters and minority voters, and he believes this could end up being the most diverse midterm electorate in U.S. history. He’s quick to add a caveat: his model has limits in states without party registration or a strong early voting tradition, and Republicans historically close much of the gap on Election Day itself.
For Suncoast voters, the practical deadline is Tuesday, November 3, when polls close and results follow. Whether you’ve already joined that 42 million or you’re waiting for Election Day, your ballot is part of the story. Have you voted early this year, and what made you decide?
