A 42-year-old Zephyrhills woman died Saturday night after her bicycle was struck by a car on State Road 54. According to authorities, the crash happened around 7:05 p.m. on Oct. 31, west of Morris Bridge Road. The woman was riding westbound in the bike lane when she turned left into the path of a westbound Hyundai Elantra driven by a 45-year-old Wesley Chapel man. She was taken to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
For those of us who drive or ride State Road 54 regularly, this is a sobering reminder of how little separates cyclists from traffic on busy suburban roads. Bike lanes offer guidance, not protection, and both drivers and riders carry responsibility at every intersection. Giving cyclists extra room, slowing down before passing, and staying visible with lights and reflective gear are habits that save lives.
Our thoughts are with both families involved as the investigation continues. As the Suncoast grows and more people bike to work, to the beach, or just around the neighborhood, these conversations matter more than ever. What changes would you like to see to make our roads safer for cyclists?
