Charlotte County Deputies Test Halloween Candy After Fentanyl Claim: Results Negative

A viral social media post claiming that Halloween candy in Charlotte County contained fentanyl has been deemed unfounded after the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office obtained and tested the candy. The results came back negative, and deputies say there is no known danger to the public.

The post also claimed the candy had been taken to the Punta Gorda Police Department for testing. Police pushed back directly, stating they received no reports of suspicious Halloween candy, were never asked to test any, and did not conduct any testing. Deputies followed up with the person who made the original post, collected the candy, and ran the test themselves.

The case is a useful example of how quickly candy-tampering rumors can spread through local social media feeds, and how a single verified test can close the loop. If you ever find something suspicious in a treat bag, contact local law enforcement’s non-emergency line rather than relying on a post.
