DeSoto County Schools Closed, Roads Flooded in North Port as Rivers Keep Rising

SHARE NOW

DeSoto County schools are closed Monday after high water swamped roads across the county and into North Port. Parts of DeSoto and Hardy counties have received up to a foot of rain in two days, and a flood warning remains in effect for Highlands, Hardy and DeSoto counties through Tuesday.

The rain has paused for now, but it isn’t finished. Bob Harrigan at WWSB says another 1 to 3 inches could fall Monday night into Tuesday, and the rivers are still climbing. No home flooding has been reported so far, though officials warn that could change. The area’s rivers aren’t expected to crest until Wednesday and Thursday, which means waterways could keep rising even after skies clear.

At least one vehicle stalled in the high water Monday morning, a reminder to turn around rather than drive through flooded roads. Parents should check school district updates for Tuesday, and commuters should plan extra time and alternate routes through midweek. Have you seen flooding on a road near you?
