A Milford, Maine, father was arrested Wednesday after a nearly ten-month investigation into the death of his 13-month-old daughter, Eleanora Ray McLaughlin, who died Dec. 28, 2025. Shane McLaughlin, 37, faces one count of manslaughter and three counts of child endangerment. He told investigators a pet left the bedroom door open, and the room, warmed by a space heater, lost its heat on a night when outside temperatures fell to 13 degrees. He said he found Eleanora when he went to wake her.
The case has drawn attention beyond Maine because of what a Department of Health and Human Services report revealed: the couple’s two other children were present in the home when Eleanora died, and DHHS had closed a separate investigation involving the couple’s twin girls just six days before the death. State Sen. Jeffrey Timberlake of Androscoggin is pressing the department for accountability, and oversight hearings are being discussed.
For Gulf Coast families, the practical takeaway is hard to miss. Even here, a cold snap can turn a poorly heated room dangerous in hours. Space heaters need clearance, doors need to stay shut, and neighbors need checking on. Does the six-day timeline in this case raise questions for you about how child welfare cases are handled?
