Flooding in Arcadia’s River Acres neighborhood intensified this week as the Peace River climbed toward 16 feet and major flood stage. Residents reported water higher than Tuesday, with many abandoning their vehicles and wading through waist-deep water to reach their homes. Dirt roads across the neighborhood are submerged, leaving boats and canoes as the only practical way to get around for some families.
More than 60 homes could be affected before the water recedes. George Martinez, whose home sits on stilts, said he was shocked at how quickly the river rose after last night. Neighbor Saleh Webber, whose wife is pregnant, is among those watching the water closely as flood warnings remain in effect across the area.
For anyone living near the Peace River or other low-lying waterways on the Suncoast, this is the moment to review your flood plan: secure important documents, prepare for pets, and check on neighbors who may need help getting out. Conditions can change fast, and the community is bracing for more water in the days ahead. Are you in a flood-prone area? What’s in your emergency kit?
