Five years ago, Sabrina and Brenden Miller of the Suncoast lost their son Beau Anthony, who was stillborn. Friends showed up with care packages in those hardest days, simple things like socks and lotion paired with a message Sabrina needed to hear: it’s not your fault, take care of yourself. The family never forgot that kindness.
Now, every year on Beau’s birthday, the Millers assemble Beau’s Bags, filled with socks, lotion, a notebook, a water bottle, and other self-care items, at a children’s table in their home with Beau’s four siblings helping out. They deliver the bags to the birth center at Oak Lawn Hospital for mothers whose babies were also stillborn. Nurses there say the bags give grieving families something tangible when words fall short.
Beau remains part of the Miller family’s count of children, and every bag with his name spreads it a little further. The family hopes the bags do more than comfort; they hope they help other families feel comfortable talking about their babies.
