Thomas Wayne Markle, 82, of Lakeland, appeared in federal court in Tampa on Friday after being charged with one count of possession of child pornography. Prosecutors say the charge follows an October search of storage units Markle rented in California, where FBI agents seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, some of the material depicts Markle with minor girls.
Markle is best known as the father of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, and the case has drawn international attention to a courtroom just up the road from our Suncoast communities. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted. The investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Central California, remains active and ongoing, and authorities have indicated more developments are possible.
As with any criminal charge, Markle is presumed innocent until proven otherwise. What are your thoughts on how cases like this should be covered when a well-known name is involved? Let us know on our social pages.
