A routine drive home from a wedding became a tragedy in the early morning hours of May 17 when a head-on collision on I-75 in Charlotte County claimed the life of 21-year-old Lauren Akey. Now, Dennis Olson is set to face a Charlotte County courtroom on Monday for his arraignment, where he’ll formally hear charges and enter a plea in connection with the deadly crash.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, video evidence shows Olson making an illegal U-turn through the median before driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-75. Just moments later, his vehicle collided head-on with Akey’s car. The impact was catastrophic for her, but it also seriously injured Jaqueline Flores and her two sons, who were traveling in a third vehicle involved in the collision. Flores described the horror of those final seconds: “I remember just seeing his headlights, but it was too little, too late. I somehow reacted in time and swerved to the right to avoid a complete head-on collision with us, but he still hit us.”
The tragedy cuts even deeper when you learn the details of Akey’s life. She’d just left a wedding and texted her parents she was nearly home minutes before impact. A USF student with her whole future ahead, Akey was planning to graduate the following year and had recently started a relationship that held real promise. Her family’s words capture the senselessness of it all: “She would’ve done amazing things. Her life was just getting started with her boyfriend. She was going to graduate next year.”
Troopers found Olson’s blood alcohol level to be nearly three times the legal limit following the crash. He’s been held without bond since the incident and now faces charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The arraignment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Charlotte County Courthouse—a proceeding that represents both accountability and a stark reminder of the consequences when impaired drivers make deadly choices on our roadways.
