BBB Warning: Protect Your Wedding Budget From Vendor No-Shows and Lost Deposits

The Better Business Bureau has a message for anyone planning a wedding on the Suncoast: slow down before you send that deposit. A BBB spokesperson says tight timelines are pushing couples to hire vendors they’ve never met in person, often sealing the deal through Instagram or a website. That’s where complaints start rolling in, most commonly about photographers who skipped the event or never delivered the final photos.

The agency’s biggest warning is about money. Couples should avoid paying one large all-in deposit before any service has actually been provided. Instead, ask for a payment schedule tied to milestones, a written cancellation policy, and a backup plan. Research vendors through more than one source, request references, and if you’re ordering a dress, confirm in writing that it’s new merchandise with a set alteration schedule.

Destination weddings and bookings made from out of state come with extra risk, and the BBB says insurance is worth considering in those cases. Whether you’re getting married at a Sarasota waterfront venue or saying vows on a Siesta Key beach, a few hours of homework can save you thousands.
