Sarasota Police have released body camera video from a September 12 motel fire on the 4000 block of North Tamiami Trail, and it shows officers moving through the building unit by unit as smoke filled the property. Officers arrived just before 7 a.m., and the video captures them knocking on doors and guiding guests outside before fire crews had fully set up.
According to the Sarasota County Fire Department, the fire began in a single unit of the seven-unit motel and spread into the attic. That vertical spread is what turned a contained room fire into something much more serious. One person was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, and the rest of the guests made it out safely.
The footage is a reminder for anyone living on or visiting the Suncoast: hotels, motels, and seasonal rentals are unfamiliar territory in an emergency. Guests rarely know the layout, and fires don’t wait for orientation. Take a minute at check-in to locate the exits and stairwells nearest your room.
