The Milwaukee Brewers drew first blood in the World Series, but it took a strikeout with runners on second and third to finish off a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1. The ninth inning had fans on both sides of the Suncoast on edge after a double play that would have ended the game was overturned on review, with shortstop Cooper Pratt ruled to have come off the bag. Trevor Megill kept his composure and struck out Jonny DeLuca to seal it.
Milwaukee’s offense came early. Christian Yelich tripled in a run in the first inning to spark a two-run rally, and starter Jacob Misiorowski made it stand with five innings of one-run ball. He also fired a 103.5 mph pitch, the fastest ever recorded in a World Series, in front of a sellout crowd witnessing Milwaukee’s first Fall Classic since 1982.
This series has extra weight to it: it’s the first World Series since 1980 between two teams still looking for their first championship. History leans toward Milwaukee, since the Game 1 winner has gone on to win it all about 62.8 percent of the time, but the Rays showed Wednesday night they won’t go quietly.
