Emily Cowles wanted her 5-year-old sheepadoodle, Swayze, to be part of her Aug. 22 wedding in Door County, Wisconsin. So she strapped a GoPro to him and let the dog film the day from his own point of view. The footage went viral, drawing millions of views and coverage from The Dodo, People and Good Morning America.
The unexpected star of the video isn’t the ceremony. It’s roughly 20 minutes of Swayze curled up beside Emily’s 91-year-old grandmother, quietly keeping her company. Emily told reporters that there will be a day when not all those people are around, especially Swayze, and that the unscripted moments are the ones the couple will keep forever. Swayze, for his part, has taken all the attention in stride.
We know a thing or two about dogs and family down here on the Suncoast, whether it’s a pup on the beach at Venice or a grandparent holding court at a Sunday cookout. Those ordinary afternoons don’t feel historic while they’re happening. A camera and a wagging tail can change that.
