Charlotte County is saying goodbye to a man who shaped this community in two very different ways. Mike Riley, founder of the rock band The Boogie Men, died Tuesday. He formed the band in the 1990s, and over the years the group played hundreds of charity events across the county, from fundraisers to community festivals. Beyond the stage, Riley spent decades as an educator and mentor in Charlotte County Schools, influencing multiple generations of local students.

His bandmate Ken Giunta, owner of Ace Drums, remembered Riley’s final performance just two weeks before his death: “He still got up next to me on the stage and we sang, we laughed, we cried.” Giunta also captured Riley’s impact as a teacher: “The beauty is that he was an inspiration to young children, you know.”

In tribute, The Boogie Men have renamed themselves “Legacy.” Celebrations of life are being planned in Charlotte County and in Riley’s Ohio hometown. If you ever saw him play, sat in his classroom, or knew him personally, we’d love to hear what he meant to you. What’s your favorite memory of Mike Riley?
