Flood Watch Issued for Manatee County and West Central Florida Through Thursday Evening

A Flood Watch is in effect for Manatee County and surrounding parts of west central Florida through Thursday evening, and the setup is one we know well here on the Suncoast. A slow-moving frontal boundary has parked over the region and is pulling in tropical moisture, which means waves of heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms from early morning through tonight. Rainfall totals look to land between one and three inches for most of us, but isolated areas could pick up five inches or more, and that’s where the trouble starts.

The watch covers coastal and inland Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Sumter, and Manatee counties. With that much rain in a short window, excessive runoff can push rivers, creeks, and streams over their banks and flood low-lying and flood-prone spots. Streets with poor drainage and urban areas could see standing water too, so expect some travel delays if you’re out and about.

The safest play today is simple: avoid driving through flooded roadways, no matter how familiar the road is, and keep monitoring local weather updates as conditions develop. If you live in an area that floods easily, move what you can to higher ground and keep pets inside and close by.
