A Toledo, Ohio, library branch shut down for the day after someone threw a box of cockroaches at a staff member on Tuesday. The Toledo Lucas County Public Library released surveillance footage of the incident at its Kent Branch, then moved the building to restricted access while crews handled cleanup and remediation. The branch reopened Wednesday.
What led up to the attack hasn’t been shared, and library officials aren’t saying whether anyone will face charges. The surveillance video is the clearest piece of evidence out there, which is why the silence on accountability is getting attention.
For those of us on the Suncoast, the story lands close to home. Our public libraries are the same kind of space: open doors, free help, staff who deal with whatever comes through them, whether it’s a hurricane prep crowd or someone having a rough day. That’s a lot to ask of the people behind the reference desk. If you’ve got a library worker in your family, give them a little extra patience this week. Would you support more security in public libraries, or does that break the whole idea of an open door? Sound off in the comments.
