Dale Brown, who led LSU men’s basketball for 25 seasons and remains the winningest coach in program history, died Oct. 23 at the age of 90. He compiled 448 victories from 1972 to 1997, won four SEC regular-season titles, and guided the Tigers to 13 NCAA Tournaments, including Final Four appearances in 1981 and 1986. Along the way he coached some of the biggest names in the sport, including NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal and former LSU star Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.

The news came just two days after LSU announced that Brown would receive the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award, an honor that recognizes coaching excellence and impact well beyond the win column. Tributes praised his humanitarian spirit and his deep bond with Louisiana, where his teams became part of the cultural landscape for a generation of fans.

Brown was born Oct. 31, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota, and died eight days before his 91st birthday. For Suncoast sports fans, especially those who followed SEC basketball through the decades, his legacy carries weight. What do you remember most about Dale Brown’s LSU teams?
