Even a partial fill, just under half a tank, cost him $470 for about 65 to 70 gallons. According to AAA, the national average diesel price hit $6.23 a gallon on Monday, with stations in places like Marion, Illinois charging as much as $6.59 while regular unleaded sat at $4.49.
That gap matters more than it looks. Diesel moves freight, and freight moves just about everything we buy. Produce for the farmers markets, restock for the shops on St. Armands, supplies for restaurants from downtown Sarasota down to Venice, all of it arrives by truck. A towing operations manager told reporters his company is absorbing the spikes without major upcharges for now, but drivers like Waddell expect the higher cost to reach grocery stores and beyond.
For a region that swells with snowbirds every fall, timing is everything. More people means more deliveries, and more deliveries means more diesel burned to keep shelves stocked. Small businesses around the Suncoast will feel it fastest, though some are holding prices steady as long as they can.
