A social media trend called the “door-kicking challenge” has migrated from phone screens into real neighborhoods, and homeowners are paying the price. In Hawaii, teens have reportedly been running up to random houses late at night and kicking doors hard enough to simulate a home invasion, then fleeing. Maui Lani residents say it’s been happening consistently for months, with surveillance cameras capturing the incidents. One homeowner spent nearly $14,000 on repairs and upgraded security after a single episode.
For residents, the fear is real. An Ewa Beach woman, speaking anonymously, said her door was kicked about five times around 9 p.m. and the impact shook the entire house. Both she and the Maui Lani homeowner asked not to be identified over concerns about retaliation. Authorities are warning that what looks like a prank can quickly become a criminal matter, especially when frightened homeowners have no way of knowing the difference between a stunt and an actual break-in.
Here on the Suncoast, quiet streets and older homes mean these trends can hit hard if they arrive. Whether you’re in Bradenton, Sarasota, or one of the beach communities, it’s worth checking that your door hardware is solid, your cameras are working, and your neighbors know how to reach you. Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement and keep any footage you capture.
