Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, one day after a Halloween home loss to Clemson left the Seminoles 3-5 overall and 1-4 in ACC play. Rick Stockstill will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season while the school conducts a national search for its next leader.
Norvell finishes his FSU tenure with a 41-39 record, a mark that includes the 2023 ACC championship and the controversial playoff snub that followed. Since then the program has slid hard: 2-10 in 2024, 5-7 in 2025, and now a midseason coaching change. The school owes Norvell just over $46 million, which works out to 85% of his remaining contract through 2031.
The timing adds another wrinkle. FSU is still searching for a new athletic director after Michael Alford was fired in September, meaning two of the most important jobs in the department are open at once. For Suncoast fans who make the drive to Tallahassee or follow the program from the beach, the next few months will shape the Seminoles for years.
What’s your take: was this the right time to make the change, or should FSU have waited until the end of the season?
