Southwest Florida Honor Flight Is Taking Applications: Free D.C. Memorial Trips for Veterans

Southwest Florida Honor Flight has opened its application window for veterans who want to make a free, one-day trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built in their honor. The rules are broader than many people expect: veterans qualify whether they served in combat or stateside, in wartime or peacetime, as long as they have never flown on an honor flight before. Each trip runs as an escorted day with guardians alongside.

The timing matters. The nonprofit flies only two missions each year, and the waiting list averages about three flights depending on individual circumstances. Priority goes to World War II and Korean War veterans and to those with life-limiting illnesses, who move up the list quickly. Organizers say veterans who wait to apply may end up waiting years.

The group is also asking the Suncoast community to help reach veterans who don’t know the program exists. Many older veterans here in Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte counties rarely mention their service, so a neighbor, fellow retiree, or family member often makes the difference. Applications are available online through the organization. Do you know a local veteran who has never seen their memorial? Tell us who they are in the comments.
