Eight more arrests were announced Thursday in connection with the October 4 mass shooting at a homecoming block party in Dooly County, Georgia, bringing the total number of people charged to eleven. Two people were killed, Ja’Quavion Aderious Jackson and Macaleb Malik Jackson, and 44 people were injured, including 28 who were shot and 16 hurt while fleeing the scene. The suspects face felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, gang participation, and firearms charges. Investigators recovered automatic rifles and handguns during searches across Crisp, Dooly, and Houston counties.
The case is not closed. Nineteen-year-old Brexton Esamuel Gaston and 34-year-old Vanravious Rashad Williams remain at large. Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy says both are considered armed and dangerous, and anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement rather than approach them. The scale of this shooting, with dozens of victims from a single gathering, has made it one of the largest investigations in that part of rural Georgia in years.
For Suncoast communities, stories like this land close to home. We gather on the beach, in parks, and at local festivals all season long, and public safety at those events is a conversation worth having. What would make you feel safer at large local gatherings? Let us know in the comments.
