A 14-year-old girl from Fort Wayne, Indiana is dead, and an 18-year-old man in Germany has been arrested on a murder count in connection with her suicide. Hamburg prosecutors say the suspect, who was 17 when the alleged crime occurred, communicated with the girl over Discord and manipulated her into harming herself and taking her own life. Investigators say he demanded she record her self-harm and later tried to obtain recordings of her suicide. Fort Wayne police held an October 14 press conference warning parents about dark web groups like NMK, or Nefarious Maniac Cult, that use Discord, Roblox and Telegram to groom and extort children.

The FBI’s Indianapolis office says it will pursue suspects across borders. Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O’Malley put it plainly: anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand there is no safe haven from justice. For families on the Suncoast, from Bradenton to Venice, this case is a reminder that the apps our kids use every evening connect them to people we’ve never met and can’t see.
