Federal agents carried out a pre-dawn raid Monday at the Washington home of Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. The Justice Department says the raid is tied to a federal criminal investigation, but the exact location is not being disclosed out of respect for her privacy, and officials have not said what agents were looking for.
Omar responded on X, calling the raid an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns,” she wrote, calling it the latest escalation in a campaign of political intimidation.
The timing is drawing the most attention here on the Suncoast and around the country: the raid comes 22 days before the midterm elections, and Omar is on the ballot. A 2024 DOJ memo barred public raids meant to hurt or discredit candidates close to an election, which raises questions about how this operation squared with that guidance. Last week, Vice President JD Vance also made an unsubstantiated immigration fraud accusation against Omar, adding to the political heat around the story.
