The federal government has moved to reclassify medical cannabis as a Schedule III substance, a shift that has patients across the Suncoast wondering what changes come next. For Florida medical marijuana cardholders, the short answer is none, at least not right away. The state’s own dispensary system stays in place, and your access works the same as it did last week.
What could change is what happens in research labs and training halls. Sabrina Fayez, who directs the Master of Science in Medical Cannabinoid Therapeutics program at LECOM in Bradenton, says the reclassification may open new opportunities to study cannabis-based treatments for epilepsy, cancer-related symptoms and complications of chronic illness. She’s also candid that the evidence base still has significant gaps when it comes to effectiveness, risks and appropriate use, and that provider education needs to keep pace. The LECOM program covers everything from cannabis history and cannabinoid interactions to dosing, business operations and regulations.
With Florida home to one of the nation’s largest medical marijuana patient populations, the stakes feel personal for a lot of families in our beach communities. Patients deserve providers who can counsel them with solid science rather than guesswork. Do you feel your healthcare provider is well-informed about medical cannabis? We’d love to hear your experience.
