A driver in Hillsborough County is lucky to be alive after a simple act of kindness turned dangerous. Early on the morning of September 29, the driver pulled over near Main Street and Grovewood Avenue to help a man who appeared to need assistance, waving a flashlight on the side of the road. Instead of accepting help, the man opened fire, striking the vehicle five times. The driver was able to escape to a nearby gas station and call authorities.

Detectives quickly identified 32-year-old Franklin Windham as the suspect. A search warrant executed at his home turned up a firearm matching the caliber used in the shooting. Windham has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and several other offenses, and the investigation remains ongoing. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said the victim stepped in to help someone he believed was in trouble, and his kindness was met with violence.

This story lands close to home for anyone who has ever pulled over on a dark Florida road, whether it’s a breakdown on I-75 or a stranger flagging you down near the beach. What do you think? Would you still stop to help a stranger, and what precautions would you take first?
