Hillsborough Sheriff Sends Helicopters and Dive Team to Panhandle for Isaias Recovery

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is sending two helicopter flight crews and an aviation mechanic to the Florida Panhandle to support recovery efforts after Hurricane Isaias. The agency’s dive team, trained in water rescue and recovery, was expected to depart Friday afternoon. Rather than heading straight into harm’s way, the crews will stage in a safe location and wait for the storm to pass before joining local, state, and federal agencies in hard-hit communities.

The deployment came at the request of the Florida State Emergency Operations Center, which coordinates resource sharing across counties during major storms. Sheriff Chad Chronister framed it as simple reciprocity: just a few years ago, after Hurricanes Helene and Milton battered the Tampa Bay region, agencies from across Florida rallied to help Hillsborough and its neighbors recover. Now the Suncoast is on the giving end.

For Gulf Coast listeners from Sarasota to Bradenton and up through Tampa, that spirit of mutual aid is familiar territory. Aviation and dive teams play a critical role after a storm, from aerial damage assessments that guide where supplies go, to water rescues and recovery operations in flooded neighborhoods. The crews will remain on standby until Isaias clears out, then get to work.
