A home invasion in Memphis ended with one intruder dead and his alleged accomplice in custody, according to police. Two men reportedly kicked open an apartment door that had been barricaded with a couch, then entered a bedroom and beat a male victim inside. During the assault, police say the victim fought one of the men, Devonta Johnson, for control of a handgun and shot him. Johnson died from his injuries.
The second man, Zarian Sanders, is accused of threatening the victim, striking him with a rifle, and fleeing with the handgun. He now faces felony charges including especially aggravated burglary and aggravated assault, with authorities holding him responsible not only for his own alleged actions but also for the events that led to his partner’s death.
The case touches on questions plenty of homeowners think about: what self-defense actually covers inside your own home, and how the law treats an accomplice when a crime turns fatal.
