An Allen County, Indiana jury convicted Stephen Bush on four counts of child molestation and two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, even though he failed to appear for his trial last month. The case began when the victim reported the abuse in 2022, describing nearly eight years of it that started when she was about six years old and continued until she was 14. Charges were filed in 2023, and this week a judge sentenced Bush to the maximum of 178 years in prison.
DNA evidence played a decisive role. Indiana State Police analyzed material found on the victim’s bed sheets, and prosecutors said it was at least 1 trillion times more likely to be Bush’s than an unknown person’s. That match, along with the victim’s testimony, left the jury with little room to doubt. Deputy prosecutors Tracy Heltz Noetzel and Emily Snyder credited the survivor directly, saying the outcome was made possible by her courage in coming forward after years of abuse.
