The Junior League of Manatee County launched its annual Little Black Dress Initiative on Monday, Oct. 26, and members are committed to wearing the same black dress or outfit for five straight days through Friday. The repeated look is designed to turn heads and open conversations about poverty, hunger, and the challenges facing families across Manatee County.
Money raised this year supports the organization’s Feed the Need initiative, which collects nonperishable food through monthly drives at local grocery stores and delivers it to food pantries throughout the county. Organizers say they’re hoping to expand the program and bring in more participants and volunteers as the campaign continues through the week.
Food insecurity is a real issue in our Gulf Coast communities, and this campaign pairs a visible, five-day demonstration with something concrete: donations landing on pantry shelves. Want to get involved? Keep an eye out for the Little Black Dress Initiative around town this week, ask members how you can help, or reach out to the Junior League of Manatee County about Feed the Need. What’s your favorite nonperishable item to donate to a local food drive?
