Local Girl Gets a Day With the Elephants at Myakka Before Treatment Starts Again

Emily has spent the last two years in and out of hospitals. Diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a rare disorder that affects bones, skin, and organs, her childhood has been measured in appointments and treatment plans. Last week, it was measured in something else: an afternoon at Myakka Elephant Ranch, washing elephants alongside her family.

The visit came together through Casey Cares, a nonprofit that creates experiences for families with critically ill children. Emily’s mother, Christine Estrabao, said a social worker linked the family to the organization, which offers opportunities like this during an otherwise brutal season. The timing mattered. Emily begins treatment again soon, and when she does, the family goes back into seclusion. Myakka Elephant Ranch hosts up to 15 families a few times each year at no cost, giving kids like Emily a few hours where they’re just kids.

It’s easy to scroll past stories like this one. Don’t. This is the Suncoast at its best: a ranch out in the green, a nonprofit making phone calls, and a family getting one good day before a hard stretch. If you know a family who could use something like this, or you want to support the work, Casey Cares and Myakka Elephant Ranch are both worth a look.
