Manatee County broke ground Friday on a $50 million renewable natural gas facility at the Lena Road Landfill, a project developed and operated by Nopetro Energy with Johnson Controls and Mead & Hunt. The plant will capture methane produced by decomposing trash, clean it, and feed the finished fuel into existing natural gas pipelines serving customers such as bus and truck fleets.
The partners call it the first project of its kind on Florida’s west coast and project annual emissions reductions equal to 5.3 million gallons of gasoline, plus enough renewable energy to power more than 4,500 homes, with an impact they compare to 22,000 acres of forest. Those figures have not been independently verified, and the county has not yet detailed exactly how the $50 million will be covered.
For Suncoast residents, the story lands at the intersection of three things we care about: local tax dollars, energy costs and environmental impact. Whether you drive past the landfill on Lena Road or watch red tide reports from the beach, projects like this shape the region’s future. What do you think, is turning landfill methane into vehicle fuel a smart investment for Manatee County?
