Mike Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end who later coached the 1985 Chicago Bears to the only Super Bowl title in franchise history, has died at 86. His family announced the passing in a statement that asked for privacy while honoring “the heart of our family.”
Ditka’s football life came in two remarkable acts. As a player with the Bears, Eagles, and Cowboys, he was a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL champion, and in 1988 he became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As a coach, he led Chicago for 11 seasons, reaching the playoffs seven times. His 1985 team, powered by a defense still debated as the best ever assembled, finished with a Super Bowl XX victory that Chicago has not matched since.
No cause of death has been released. Tributes are already pouring in from former players, rival coaches, and fans across the country who grew up watching the sweater vest pace the sideline.
