Baby prep classes cover swaddling, diapers, and decoding cries. Almost none of them cover what the mother herself will go through after birth. Nicole Parmelee felt that gap firsthand during her own fourth trimester, so she founded the New Moms School in Greenville, South Carolina, an eight-week series built around the parent, not just the baby.
The program brings in a relationship counselor, a positive parent coach, a therapist, a lactation consultant, and a speech-language pathologist. Just as important, moms stay connected between sessions through a Facebook group and group chat. As Parmelee puts it, that’s women supporting other women, and we need more of it.
For Suncoast families, the takeaway is worth carrying home. Whether it’s a formal program or simply checking in on the new mom down the street, postpartum support is community care. Retirees here often become the village for young parents far from their own families, and that role matters more than we sometimes admit.
Do you know a new mom who could use some support right now?
