A newborn is healthy and safe after being surrendered Tuesday evening at the Safe Haven Baby Box at Knoxville Fire Station 17. Crews received the silent alarm around 7:45 p.m., found the baby inside, and took the infant to a hospital for evaluation. It was the third time the box has been used since it was installed in February 2023, making it Tennessee’s first and one of 33 across the state today.
The box works quietly and deliberately. It’s climate-controlled, and it triggers a silent alarm so firefighters respond within minutes without the parent being identified. Fire department spokesperson Timothy Woods thanked the parent for keeping the baby safe, and the organization behind the boxes, Safe Haven Baby Boxes, continues to offer free medical and counseling resources to birth mothers through a national hotline.
For families here on the Suncoast, the practical takeaway is that help exists and nobody has to face a crisis alone or without options. Florida has safe haven protections of its own, and surrendered newborns are typically adopted within 30 to 45 days. Would you know where to point a neighbor in need?
