A Sarasota County jury has convicted Michael David Reinel of North Port of second-degree murder with a firearm, rejecting his claim that he acted in self-defense when he shot another man five times inside a home in February 2025. The verdict came after a three-day trial before Judge Frederick Mercurio at the Sarasota County Courthouse from Oct. 26 to 28.
Prosecutors said the shooting happened around 9 p.m. on Feb. 6, 2025, following an argument. Evidence included a .357-caliber revolver recovered from Reinel’s bedroom, forensic testing matching the weapon to a projectile found in the victim’s body, and testimony that two of the five gunshot wounds entered through the victim’s back. In closing arguments, the state said the defendant “brought a gun to the living room to end the argument once and for all,” and that self-defense in Florida must rest on more than wanting to win an argument.
The North Port Police Department led the investigation, with assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. For Suncoast residents, the case raises familiar questions about how Florida’s self-defense protections are applied in real courtrooms, particularly in incidents that begin as arguments rather than home invasions.
