Palmetto High’s Tyraun Martin began the 2026 season on the JV squad, playing receiver. A few months later, he’s a starting defensive back on a Tigers team sitting at 4-1 and earning recognition as this week’s ABC7 Athlete of the Week. The move from receiver to cornerback, and then to free safety, happened fast, but Martin made it stick with work that his coaches noticed immediately.
Defensive coordinator Matt Braselton doesn’t frame Martin’s rise around talent. He calls him a tireless worker, a grinder, a blue-collar guy who simply does what the coaches ask. Head coach Eric Sanders has echoed that praise, pointing to the weight room as the foundation of Martin’s rapid progress. For a program with Palmetto’s expectations, that kind of consistency matters as much as any highlight reel.
Martin’s goal for the rest of the season is straightforward. “I just want to win States with my boys,” he said. “We hope we win a ring.” The Tigers take the next step Friday night on the road at Parrish, and fans across the Suncoast will be watching to see if this breakout junior keeps climbing.
