Panther Ridge residents will need a new route starting September 30. FDOT is fully closing the community’s main entrance at 197th Street East and State Road 7445 to build a roundabout, part of the larger State Road 70 widening project. The closure runs through November 14.
A marked detour will guide drivers around the work zone, and FDOT says emergency vehicles will still be able to pass through. Even so, neighbors are bracing for longer errand runs, school pickups, and commutes for more than six weeks. The concern about emergency response times has come up repeatedly in community conversations.
The upside comes later. Roundabouts generally move traffic more efficiently and reduce serious crashes compared to traditional intersections, and SR 70 has been due for widening for years. For now, the advice is simple: learn the detour before you need it and add a few extra minutes to every trip.
