Federal student loan borrowers can now get a 1% interest rate discount for enrolling in autopay, up from the old 0.25% break. That’s four times the savings, and it applies for two years, running through July 2028. The catch is the deadline: you must be enrolled in autopay by Sept. 30, 2026, and only loans first disbursed after July 1, 2012, qualify. If you’re not sure when your loans were disbursed, your loan servicer’s website will tell you.
Before you sign up, confirm what your monthly payment will actually be for at least the next twelve months. Autopay only helps if the withdrawal fits your budget. If your income has changed since you last certified it, whether from a job loss, a pay cut, or reduced hours, you can recertify with current pay stubs, which may lower your monthly bill or move you onto a better repayment plan.
Financial expert Robert Farrington of The College Investor points out that if a student loan payment is hard to make, being on the right repayment plan for your current income matters more than any discount. So the smart order of operations is this: check your loan details, confirm your payment, explore recertification if your income dropped, then enroll in autopay before the deadline.
